I wondered about this costume choice (of Christmas cracker hat) for Kevin Spacey’s Richard (and later Haydn Gwynne’s Queen Elizabeth) until I re-read Henry VI, part 3 (the histories have never been my strong suit) where Queen Margaret says the following to the Duke of York, Richard III’s father, just before he is executed:

Yorke cannot speake, vnlesse he weare a Crowne.
A Crowne for Yorke; and Lords, bow lowe to him:
Hold you his hands, whilest I doe set it on.-

[Putting a paper Crown on his head]

I marry Sir, now lookes he like a King:
I, this is he that tooke King Henries Chaire,
And this is he was his adopted Heire.

(Henry VI, part 3, Act 1, Scene 4)
